How to Choose the Right Front Entry Door
A front entry door is an exterior door at your home's main entrance. The right choice balances the look you want with the opening size, weather exposure, privacy and installation requirements. Start with fit and function, then select the material, glass and finishing details.
Compare Front Door Materials and Designs
Choose a material for its appearance and the requirements of your specific entrance. Weather resistance, insulation and maintenance depend on the complete door assembly, its finish, glazing, seals and installation—not just whether it is wood or metal.
| Door choice | What it offers | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Wood front door | Natural grain and a choice of door styles and finishes. | Wood species, finish, exterior exposure requirements and maintenance instructions for the selected door. |
| Metal front door | Metal framing with solid or glazed designs. | Frame construction, finish care, available glazing and the assembly's thermal performance. |
| Front door with glass | Daylight and a choice of clear or privacy-oriented designs. | Available glass types, sightlines, privacy and any performance information for that configuration. |
| Double, arched or Dutch door | A different opening shape or way of using the entrance. | Opening dimensions, operation, hardware and whether the selected model is suitable for exterior use. |
Explore metal front entry doors, arched exterior doors and exterior wood Dutch doors to compare designs. For a wider entrance, see double exterior doors.
Measure for the Door, Frame and Swing
A door slab is the door panel; a prehung door includes a door already hung in a frame. Replacing only the slab requires checking compatibility with the existing frame, hinges and lock preparation. A new frame requires measurements for the complete assembly. Confirm what is included with the specific Rustica door before ordering.
- Identify the replacement scope. Decide whether you are keeping the existing frame or replacing the door and frame together.
- Record the opening dimensions. Measure width and height at several points and note wall or jamb depth. A slab measurement is not the same as a rough-opening measurement.
- Confirm swing and handing. Check which side the hinges belong on, the direction the door opens and clearance for nearby walls, steps or furniture.
- Include adjoining features. Sidelights, transoms and paired doors change the assembly dimensions. Do not size them from the door panel alone.
- Review before purchase. Have your installer verify the final dimensions, fit and installation requirements against the selected product.
Use our standard door sizes guide for terminology and planning, or learn more about slab doors. Standard dimensions are a starting point, not a substitute for measuring your opening.
Choose Glass, Privacy and Finishing Details
Consider how much daylight you want and what someone outside can see into your home. Compare the glass choices available for the door you select, including their appearance from both sides. The size and placement of the glass matter as much as the glass style.
Sidelights and transom windows can bring light beside or above the entrance. For paired glazed designs, explore French doors and confirm exterior suitability for the model you choose.
Coordinate the door finish with your trim and exterior materials, then confirm hinge, handle and lock compatibility. Request available finish samples to see materials in your own light before making a final selection.
What Determines the Cost of a Custom Front Door?
Door design, dimensions, material, glass, finish, frame and hardware selections can affect the price. A starting price is not the total for every configuration. Open a product to review its available choices and current pricing, and check which components are included.
Plan separately for installation, possible changes to the opening and delivery requirements. Review custom-order planning and production timing and shipping information before scheduling your installer. Confirm timing for your order rather than assuming every door has the same lead time.
Explore Front Entry Door Styles
Compare the steel-and-glass grid of the Mountain French Full with the horizontal glass divisions of the Modern Cottage, or the symmetrical grid of the Provence. For a different silhouette, the Tuscan uses an arched solid wood design, while the Dairy Dutch has independently opening upper and lower sections. See the Popular Entry Doors selection above, then open a product to review its available customizations and details.
Maintain Your Front Door and Know When to Replace It
Follow the cleaning and maintenance instructions for your door's material and finish. Inspect the finish, seals, sweep and hardware for wear, especially after changes in weather. Repair damaged finishes and replace worn components as appropriate; do not apply a cleaner, wax or coating without checking its compatibility.
Persistent sticking, gaps, water entry or difficulty locking can have several causes, including the frame or installation. Have the assembly assessed before deciding whether to repair or replace it. Door life depends on exposure, construction, installation and care. Review Rustica's warranty information for applicable terms.
Front Entry Door Questions
What is the difference between a front door and an exterior door?
A front door is an exterior door used at the main entrance. Exterior doors can also serve side, back or other outside entrances. Choose a model intended for the location and exposure where it will be installed.
Which front door material is best for cold weather?
Compare the performance of the complete door assembly, including its glazing, frame, weather seals and threshold. Material alone does not establish insulation or air-leakage performance. Ask for the available tested ratings and installation requirements for the specific configuration.
Can I order a custom-size front door?
Available dimensions depend on the door model. Open a product to review its width and height options. If your opening needs a size outside the listed choices, contact Rustica with your measurements before ordering to discuss what is possible for your project.
Can I order a front door with sidelights or a transom?
Rustica has a collection of exterior doors with sidelights and transom windows. Available combinations depend on the design. Confirm the complete assembly dimensions and options before placing your order.
Can I replace a front door without replacing its frame?
A slab replacement may be possible if the existing frame is sound and compatible with the new panel, hinges and lock preparation. Ask your installer to assess the frame and verify the fit before ordering.
How long does it take to install a front entry door?
The time depends on whether the installer is replacing a slab, replacing the frame or changing the opening. Sidelights, transoms and repairs can add work. Get a project-specific estimate after the installer has assessed the opening.
How do I choose a secure front door?
Consider the door, frame, lock, strike and installation together. Check hardware compatibility and how the selected glass and door design fit your privacy and security needs. A material name alone does not establish the security of the entrance.
