Exterior Doors with Sidelights and Transom Windows
Bring the doorway and surrounding glass together in one considered design. Browse exterior doors with side windows and overhead transoms, from warm wood frames to detailed steel-and-glass entrances.
Explore eight entry designs with different door patterns and materials. Each listing offers configurations to review alongside the space available for sidelights and a transom.
Exterior Doors with Sidelights and Transom Windows Buying Guide
Sidelights are narrow window units beside a door; a transom is the window above it. An exterior entry can combine a door with one sidelight, two sidelights, a transom or a selected combination. The complete frame occupies more space than the door alone, so its overall dimensions are the starting point for planning the opening.
01
Place the additional glass
Choose side glazing, overhead glazing or both according to the opening and the view you want from inside.
02
Keep the layout cohesive
Compare the door’s rails and glass pattern with the surrounding windows, frame and trim.
03
Size the entire unit
Include the door, side units, transom and connecting frame members in the assembly dimensions.

What to verify
One sidelight
Adds glazing to one side and creates an asymmetric composition.
Which side receives the window and how that relates to the door swing.
Two sidelights
Frames the door with a balanced pair of windows.
Total unit width and alignment between the door and side units.
Transom above
Adds a band of glazing over the door.
Assembly height, overhead framing and available headroom.
Sidelights and transom
Surrounds the door with a larger glazed composition.
The complete unit dimensions and the intersections between frames.
Design the View from Both Sides
Look at the entry from the approach to the house and from the room behind the door. A sidelight next to a walkway creates a different view into the home than a high transom. Consider what each pane overlooks before choosing clear or privacy glass.
A single sidelight can fit an asymmetric façade, while a pair can reinforce a centered entrance. Overhead glass introduces height. Select the arrangement for the proportions of the actual wall, rather than assuming every pictured combination will fit an existing opening.
Match the Door, Sidelights and Transom
Start with the main door’s composition. A regular grid, five horizontal panels and a diamond pattern each establish a different visual rhythm. Compare how the adjacent window divisions meet the door rails, and check whether the selected side units follow the door’s design or use a simpler glass layout.
Wood, metal and mixed assemblies may use different frame details. Review the configuration drawing and finish selections for every component. The material of the door panel alone does not identify the material of the surrounding jamb or window frame.
Record the structural opening and the space occupied by the current frame and trim. Adding a sidelight changes the width of the entry unit; adding a transom changes its height. Door-leaf size, frame size and the rough opening are separate dimensions that need to agree before fabrication.
Have the installer review any proposed change to the opening, including the framing above it. Confirm how the unit will meet the wall, sill and exterior water-management details. A replacement door’s dimensions cannot establish the required opening for a larger glazed assembly.
If your project concerns the surrounding window units, the sidelights and transoms collection provides a focused place to review those components and their available configurations.
Choose Glass for Light, Privacy and Exposure
The glass selection applies to more than the door. Review the side and overhead panes too, particularly when they overlook a private room or sit beside the lockset. Ask which glass specifications are supplied in each part of the selected exterior assembly.
A privacy texture changes visibility; it does not create the same effect as a solid panel. Compare samples and the direction of the view, and discuss the selected frame and glazing performance for the location. Avoid treating the presence of a transom or double-pane glass as a complete performance specification.
Price the Configuration You Will Actually Install
Configure the number and placement of side windows, the transom, size, glass and finish before comparing prices. Include the installation package and any separate handle or lockset in the total. Changing from a door alone to a complete surround can also change delivery and installation requirements.
Product photographs show particular configurations. Confirm the order summary against the chosen arrangement, especially when a listing offers multiple sidelight and transom combinations.
Before You Order
Sketch the arrangement
Mark the door swing, which side windows are wanted and whether a transom is included.
Confirm all dimensions
Have the installer reconcile the assembly drawing with the rough opening, wall depth and sill.
Review every glass and frame selection
Check the door, sidelights and transom individually in the order configuration.
Complete the installation plan
Account for hardware, exterior sealing details, delivery access and fitting the entire unit.
Exterior Doors with Sidelights and Transom Windows: Common Questions
What is the difference between a sidelight and a transom?
A sidelight sits beside the door. A transom sits above the door or entry assembly. Either can be used as part of a larger exterior entrance when the selected design and opening allow it.
Can I add sidelights without making the opening wider?
Only if the complete replacement unit fits the available opening. Side windows and their framing occupy width, so an existing door-only opening may need changes. Confirm the assembly dimensions before ordering.
Does every product include the transom shown in its name?
These listings offer sidelight and transom configurations. Review the selected options and order summary to confirm the exact window arrangement included in your purchase.
Can a transom replace a ventilation window?
Do not assume a decorative transom opens. Verify the operation specified for the selected product; a fixed pane brings light and a view but does not provide ventilation.
