Why Choose a Glass Shower Door?

Whether you’re designing a bathroom for a new home or about to dive into a complete bathroom remodel project, one of the essential design aspects to consider is the shower enclosure. The shower enclosure helps define the style and function of a bathroom. Because of this, a shower enclosure with a glass shower door is one of the most popular, durable, and aesthetically pleasing design options.

A glass shower door is a beautiful addition to the home and has many benefits. It increases safety, functionality, and home value. Plus, it’s easy to clean, highly durable, decreases mold buildup, and offers a stunning sleek aesthetic.

After learning more about each of these benefits, you’ll see why a glass shower door is one of the best investments you can make for your new bathroom.

Top 10 Benefits of Glass Shower Doors

1. Completely Customizable

When designing a glass shower door with Rustica, you’ll have access to a variety of customization options. By customizing your new shower door, you’ll ensure that it’s the exact design and size you need for your space. Let’s break down how to use Rustica’s customization options to create your new glass shower door.

All of our high-quality glass shower doors are made of the finest tempered glass, which is a type of safety glass that is incredibly strong and break resistant. While there are a few types of glass we offer for windows and doors, our shower doors are exclusively tempered glass because of its strength and safety profile.

Rustica’s customization options include glass thickness, glass type, door width & height, hinge side & type, handle style, size, and placement, and hardware finish.

For glass thickness, we offer ⅜ inch thickness or ½ inch thickness. When it comes to glass type, there are several decorative glass options to choose from, including regular clear glass, tinted glass, or obscured glass. Our tinted glass options include bronze, grey, and starphire, while our obscured glass options include frosted, rain, aqui, and bubble. Obscured glass is textured glass that distorts or “obscures” the image behind it. Because of this, obscured glass is used for increased privacy, and is commonly used for glass shower doors, glass shower enclosures, and bathroom windows.

When selecting the width and height, you can choose up to four feet in width and nine feet in height. This allows for plenty of variability in door size, which ensures you receive the exact door size you need for your new glass shower enclosure.

For the door hinge, you can choose to have it installed on the left or right side. To know which one you need, stand outside the shower (or where it will be) and look at the shower door. Does the door need to hinge on the left side or right side? This affects which direction your door will swing. Does it need to open to the left or the right?

Finally, you can pick whether you want a square hinge or a round hinge. This selection is purely aesthetic. Rustica will automatically configure the size and quantity of hinges needed based on the size and thickness of the door you order.

By figuring out which side the door will hinge on, you can then decide on the handle style, size, and placement. For handle style, we offer a few different styles that range from sleek and modern to elegant and traditional. The handle size can be either six inches or eight inches, and is measured from center hole to center hole. The handle placement ranges from 24 inches to 48 inches and is measured from the bottom of the glass door to the midpoint of the handle, regardless of the size of the handle.

Lastly, you can customize the type of hardware finish, which applies to the handle, hinges, and anchor bracket (if needed) for your new glass shower door. We offer a variety of hardware finishes, including matte black, polished chrome, satin brass, and more!

2. Makes Bathroom More Spacious

Bathrooms are usually the smallest rooms in a home. Because of this, they can feel a bit cramped sometimes. When you have a shower curtain or bulky framed shower enclosure, it can make the space feel even smaller.

With a glass shower door, you can achieve the opposite effect: more spaciousness. This is because glass allows light to pass through, creating a more open feeling.

If you want your bathroom to feel open and spacious, a glass shower door will significantly help create that effect. Clear glass is the best glass option for this purpose, but obscured glass will also create spaciousness as it still allows light to pass through.

Furthermore, a frameless glass shower enclosure and frameless glass shower door create a more efficient layout in larger bathrooms, as it maximizes the available space. This is because frameless shower enclosures usually fit well in corner areas or right up against the wall where they’re out of the way and won’t interfere with the rest of the bathroom layout.

3. Natural Light Flow

Along with creating more spaciousness, a glass shower door also allows for more natural light flow. This is one of the main purposes of glass: to allow light to flow and create clear visibility into other areas.

Shower enclosures with a shower curtain block natural or artificial light, which creates dim lighting in the shower. While some may not mind the lack of light, many prefer a bright and sunny shower experience, especially when taking a shower in the morning or during the day. It creates a rejuvenating, relaxing shower experience.

If you love the idea of natural light flowing into your shower to brighten your shower experience, then a clear glass shower door is the way to go. It will also help brighten the bathroom as a whole, as glass allows for effortless light flow. For increased privacy without sacrificing natural light, choose one of our obscured glass options.

4. Increased Safety

One of the reasons people choose to undergo a bathroom remodel is to increase the safety of their shower or bath enclosure. Traditional bath enclosures feature a structure that one must step over to get into. For some, this can be challenging and can increase the risks of slipping.

Frameless shower enclosures with a glass shower door eliminate needing to step over and into something, and allows one to simply walk into the shower. In this way, glass shower doors and enclosures are generally safer than traditional bath enclosures.

Furthermore, shower curtains aren’t as effective at blocking splashing water from the shower base, and may cause water to pool outside of the shower or tub enclosure. When stepping out of the shower, the excess water creates a slipping hazard. Shower doors are much more effective at blocking splashing water, decreasing the likelihood of water pooling up at the shower entrance. This makes glass shower doors much safer than traditional shower curtains.

Another way shower glass doors are safer than shower curtains is their strong and sturdy structure. If one happens to slip and grab onto a shower curtain to steady themselves, the shower curtain can fall and land on the individual, creating a hazardous situation. A shower door is a much stronger structure to lean on, as one can grab the handle if they lose their footing, and it won’t slip from its place, creating a safer environment for those who need extra support.

5. Smoother Functionality

A frameless shower door has the significant benefit of opening either in or out, which allows for smoother functionality. A framed shower door, in comparison, can only open in one direction, either out or in. This decreases the functionality of the glass shower door, as it limits the ease of entering and exiting the shower.

A shower glass door is also much smoother and easier to open than a shower curtain, which can get bundled up on the shower rod. While this is a small nuisance that most overlook, the easy transition getting in and out of the shower with a shower door won’t go unnoticed.

6. Decreases Mold

A major disadvantage of shower curtains is how difficult they are to clean. Due to their structure and the presence of multiple ridges in the curtain, it’s easy for mold to build up. With a shower curtain, you either have to take it completely down and lay it out to scrub it clean or completely replace it with a new curtain. Most folks decide to replace the curtain altogether after a few years, which isn’t as sustainable or cost-effective as a high-quality shower door.

While a framed shower door is easier to clean than a shower curtain, it still has framed edges that allow mold and scum buildup. Even a sliding shower door can build up mold in the tracks. Cleaning mold out of the track and on the framed edges can be a difficult task to complete. This is not only frustrating, but can also become a safety hazard.

A frameless shower door and frameless shower enclosure have significantly less mold build-up than their counterparts. This is because they lack ridges, parts, or a track for mold and bacteria to hide. This makes them safer for the overall household’s health, and much cleaner than both a framed shower door and shower curtain. With regular maintenance and cleaning, you won’t have to worry about mold build-up on your frameless glass shower enclosure or door.

7. Durability

Given that the definition of durable is something that can withstand wear, pressure, or damage, it’s easy to conclude that a regular shower curtain doesn’t meet those requirements. A heavy glass shower door, on the other hand, is most definitely able to withstand years of wear or pressure, and isn’t susceptible to damage.

Why doesn’t a shower curtain not live up to that definition? As mentioned earlier, it’s easy for a shower rod to slip from its place on the wall if there’s too much pressure applied to it. It’s also easy to damage, and has to frequently be replaced due to the build-up of mold or scum.

With a glass shower door, it is firmly secured into the wall and or glass shower enclosure. Because of this, it can withstand normal wear and tear, as well as direct pressure. The fact that a glass shower door is manufactured with thick tempered glass means that it’s able to withstand more pressure and force than normal glass. This makes the shower door extremely strong and break-resistant, meaning you’ll have a durable shower door that lasts for years to come.

8. Sleek Aesthetic

While the function and durability of a glass shower door is highly important, it’s equally valuable to consider the aesthetics of your shower enclosure. If you’re designing a new bathroom or undergoing a bathroom remodel, the style and design of the space are probably top of mind.

Nothing is more stylish, modern, and aesthetically pleasing than a glass shower door. It helps open the space and allows for natural light flow to fill the area, giving the bathroom a clean and spacious feel. Combined that with crisp clear glass or decorative obscured glass, and you have a shower enclosure that is as beautiful as the design of your home.

Using Rustica’s impressive customization options, you can design your glass shower door to match the style of your new or existing bathroom. For example, you can choose between several handles that offer modern sleekness and elegance. Even the small details, such as the finish of the hardware and handle, can greatly contribute to the overall design of your new shower.

While a glass shower door is a sleek and modern style, it isn’t exclusive to modern or contemporary style homes. The beauty of customization is that you can design a glass shower door for any style bathroom or home, no matter the overall interior design style.

Again, the little details, such as the hardware finish, handle, and glass style, define the aesthetic of your glass shower enclosure.

9. Increases Home Value

Another significant benefit of frameless glass shower doors is its ability to increase your home’s value. Glass shower doors can increase your home’s value because of the many benefits it adds to the home, as described in this article.

For example, if you customize the shower enclosure to match the home and bathroom’s interior design style, you’ll have a sleek and consistent design that will impress potential home buyers. The increased spaciousness and openness of the bathroom also adds an inviting element that makes the bathroom pleasant to be in. Furthermore, the increased safety and durability of a strong, long-lasting glass shower door increases a home’s overall value. These aspects, along with the decrease in mold, enhance the home’s quality and value.

Given all these remarkable advantages, it’s no wonder that a glass shower door increases the value of your home. This is something to remember if you are remodeling with the intent to resell or you’re designing a new home to list on the market.

10. Easy to Clean

Although it’s already been mentioned that glass shower doors are easy to clean, this benefit deserves its own section, as it is truly one of the greatest advantages of owning a glass shower door.

Because the glass shower door lacks a frame or sliding track, you don’t have to worry about trying to scrub hard-to-reach cracks or edges. The absence of these hard edges and cracks prevents the build-up of mold and scum. As previously noted, shower curtains are more difficult to clean, and most homeowners decided to replace them rather than take the time to clean them.

With a glass shower door, all you need to do is give it frequent wipe-downs and an occasional deep scrub, and you’ll have a sparkling clean door. If you opt for clear glass, your guests won’t be able to help but notice how impeccably crisp and clear your glass is.

Even if you choose an obscured glass type that has a textured surface, such as rain, it’s still much easier to scrub clean than it is to clean a shower frame, track, or shower curtain.
All that to say, if you’re interested in a shower door that requires little maintenance and easy cleaning, then a glass shower door is perfect for your bathroom renovation project.

How to Clean Glass Shower Doors

Glass shower doors are incredibly easy to clean, especially if you know the right tips and tricks to keep them glistening and scum free.

In this context, “scum” refers to the hard water buildup that glass shower doors are prone to. Hard water buildup occurs when water dries on the glass and forms a hard mineral deposit.

If a glass shower door isn’t regularly cleaned, these hard mineral buildups can be difficult to remove. But, if you follow these guidelines, hard water buildups will be easy to tackle.

For regular maintenance, a home cleaning solution of one cup water, one cup vinegar, and one teaspoon dish soap is the best way to clean a glass shower door. This solution works well with glass shower doors that don’t have a hard buildup of “scum.”

Simply spray your glass shower door with the solution. Let the solution sit on the glass surface for about five minutes to allow the vinegar enough time to dissolve the mineral buildup.

After five minutes, scrub clean with a non-scratch scrub sponge. When scrubbing the surface, you’ll want to listen for any roughness. This indicates that you are scrubbing an area with a hard water buildup, and you’ll want to keep scrubbing until you feel or hear the roughness disappear. Then, rinse with water and wipe dry with a microfiber cloth for a streak-free finish.

If the homemade vinegar solution isn’t powerful enough to remove the hard water buildup, you can purchase a shower cleaning solution that contains oleic and citric acid, which can cut through mineral deposits. Use the same method as described above.

For daily maintenance to prevent hard water buildups, use a squeegee after each shower. It’s best to squeegee from top to bottom to remove as much water from the glass shower door as possible. Another option is to use a windshield water repeller, such as Rain-X, which will prevent the water from building up on the glass surface.
