1. Choose a Style

You may be looking for contemporary sliding door hardware to complement your minimalist style, or you may be on the search for more traditional hardware with a hint of rustic charm. Rustica offers rolling door hardware kits in both of these styles (and many more) through two different series of barn door hardware kits for your interior sliding doors.You can also create your own custom barn door hardware by picking the track finish and length at check out. 

The Builder Series features four variations of similar straight, clean lines. Most styles in this category come in four different finishes, including flat/matte black, raw steel, oil rubbed bronze, and copper. Within this series, the Classic Barn Door Hardware option expands into 21 different finishes, including barn red, antique pewter, brushed stainless steel, and modern gold—giving you more color choices within the same simple, sleek design.

The Designer Series provides a homeowner with even more artisan hardware options. 2. Choose a System

Hand in hand with choosing style comes choosing functionality. After deciding on your preferred style, you’ll need to choose a sliding barn door hardware system to cater to the door’s specific function.

Standard barn door system: A single door panel runs along a single rail, with a hanger at each end of the panel.

Biparting barn door hardware system: A single rail allows for double doors to run in front of the wall. A total of four hangers are used to attach the doors to the track.

Bypass barn door hardware system: Double sliding barn doors pass in front of and behind each other as they run along two different tracks. Each door requires two hangers, one on each end. This system is also available as a light duty system for a lighter door weight and in heavy duty options for a larger weight capacity.

Triple bypass barn door hardware system: Similar to the bypass system but allows for three or more tracks and doors. Two hangers are required per door.

Pricing for each system varies, depending on the chosen style and the number of tracks and hangers required. For example, a standard sliding door hardware kit that costs $128 will increase in price to $204 for a bi-parting barn door hardware kit since more hangers are required. A bypassing barn door hardware kit in this same series will cost $319 since there are two tracks and two doors that require hardware. The cost of this same system will continue to increase in tandem with the amount of hardware needed.

The following pricing shows the average cost of a Rustica sliding door hardware kit within each system. The prices reflect the cost of a basic, flat track for interior doors includes all tracks, door stops, bolts, rollers, and hangers needed for interior doors. This pricing does not include additional hardware that can be added to your barn door kit, like door handles, pulls, or locks, and does not consider hardware for sliding cabinet doors or oversized doors.

3. Select Track Style and Length

Depending on the type of hardware system, you’ll have the option to choose from a few different sliding door track styles. Rustica’s tracks cooperate with both your design needs and the dimensions of your space.

Low Profile Barn Door Hardware: Hugs the top of the door more tightly, making this system perfect for rooms and spaces with ceiling and header gaps as limited as three inches.

Ceiling Mount Sliding Door Hardware: Perfect for a homeowner who does not have enough clearance for a traditional hardware mount or one who desires to divide a too-large space. Mounting directly onto the ceiling, this sliding barn door track provides a functional solution with an industrial chic, brushed steel flair.

Cabinet Sliding Door Hardware: Smaller hangers for limited rolling clearance or for shutters, cabinet doors, or mirror panels.

J Track Barn Door Hardware: A rolling door design in which the hangers lie flush with the height of the header, making it another option for low clearance spaces.

Tube Track Barn Door Hardware: Using u-shaped hangers and a contemporary, rounded rail, the tube track hardware system brings an industrial look to your modern space.

Flat Track Barn Door Hardware: A classic design for more traditional barn doors. This track’s sturdy and reliable raw steel creates a simple yet fashionable design.

Box Track Barn Door Hardware: Attaches to the top of the door instead of its face, allowing a homeowner to show off the craftsmanship of the barn door or protect its face from drill holes.

Most manufacturers also suggest installing a bottom track that attaches to either the wall or to the floor so that the barn door does not swing back and forth, hitting the wall. In order to install a bottom track, a homeowner or contractor should allow for approximately ½ inch space in between the floor and the bottom of the door. Rustica always includes a bottom track along with their interior barn door hardware kits, but it is up to you to decide if you would like to install it.
After choosing your track style, you’ll be prompted to choose your track length. This step of the process is easy. Your track length should be at least double the width of your door, so you’ll just need to measure your barn door’s width and choose double that number from the drop-down menu.

4. Choose Your Door (Buy Rustica or Use Your Own)

Generally, any style of door can be installed into a rolling and sliding hardware track system. With Rustica hardware, you have the freedom to buy one of the barn doors for sale on our website or use your own door. If you are using your own door, you will need to measure door thickness and choose that size from the drop-down menu so that your sliding door hardware can be customized accordingly. We suggest rounding your measurements to the nearest ¼ inch.

If you decide to purchase a Rustica barn door, you’ll first need to customize it to your preferences by choosing from single sliding and double barn doors or bypassing barn doors. Similar to our hardware kits, we also offer two main categories for interior barn door styles. The Builders Series includes classic, wooden barn doors while the Designer Series contains rustic sliding door designs that range from industrial and modern to French country and rustic. This series even features doors made of glass, chalkboard, leather, and scrap metal.

Once you’ve found the willpower to limit your choice to just one of the many beautiful barn doors offered, you’ll need to indicate the width and height of your door. You have some flexibility in choosing the width of your sliding door. You can match it to the width of your door opening, measuring from the outside of the trim on the left-hand side to the outside of the trim on the right-hand side. If you don’t have any trim, you’ll need to measure between the left and right vertical edge of your doorway and add a total of 4 inches to that number. These measurements are a minimum requirement for door width. Your other option for width is to purchase a wider door that will extend beyond the doorway in either direction, if you prefer, to make more of a statement in your space.

For height, you should measure from the floor upwards to the outer vertical edge of your trim. Then, subtract ½ inch to ensure room for the hardware to roll. For doors without trim, you can measure directly from the floor to the beginning of the edge of the top of the doorway.

Choose both texture and finish and then decide if you want to receive the door assembled or unassembled. The assembled door will arrive with most of the hardware in place, making wall, ceiling, and floor mounting much easier and quicker to complete. These pre-assembled doors cost around $400 more. Unassembled doors arrive with everything you need for your DIY barn door hardware installation, along with concise directions that allow you to complete the assembly process in under 45 minutes.

5. Decide if You Want a Soft Close Barn Door Hardware

For all Rustica flat track systems, you have the option of choosing their Soft Close System which creates a quiet, gentle movement for your sliding door. This system includes a mechanism on either side of the track to prevent anyone from slamming your door closed or throwing it open too quickly. Instead, this door stop gradually slows down the rollers, protecting both your door and hardware system.

6. Choose If You Want to Add Barn Door Handles or Pulls

Including handles as part of your interior barn door hardware kit creates added function to your new door. You can mix and match finishes and styles to complement your track and hanger systems, and you can choose either handles, pull rings, or straps. To allow for sliding, all handles are vertical—but the size, material, and finish are up to your unique design inspiration. What’s in a Barn Door Hardware Kit?

How to Measure for Barn Door Hardware

Learning how to measure for a barn door and barn door hardware is one of the most important steps you'll take to ensure that your barn door looks and functions exactly how you want it to in your space. Your barn door hardware kit from Rustica is available in multiple track sizes so you can find the perfect fit.

The barn door track will always be longer than the width of the doors, as the ends of the track extend at least an inch or two beyond the doors to allow them to move. Depending on the type of system you have, you may have tracks that are significantly longer than the door width. As a good rule of thumb, we recommend doubling the width of the sliding door or double door and adding another four to six inches to that number for your minimum measurement.

It's important to make sure that you have enough space to accommodate your track on each side of the door opening. Once you have your measurement, mark where the ends of your track will fall on the wall to ensure a fit. 
We suggest having someone help you measure, just to double-check accuracy before ordering your door panel and sliding barn door hardware.

Can Barn Door Hardware Be Cut?

One of the reasons it's crucial to get the measurement for your barn door kit and track correct is that Rustica's rolling barn door hardware tracks are not designed to be cut after the order. That's because each barn door kit is made with a specific process, with everything finished off in our warehouses to ensure lifetime quality and reliability.

While you may be tempted to cut your track after realizing it's not a perfect fit for your space, we highly suggest not doing this. Cutting the track will immediately void Rustica's warranties and guarantees that come with the door hardware kit, which makes it non-returnable and non-refundable in case of an issue.

Instead, we recommend contacting us if you need to exchange your kit for a different size. We allow exchanges on any non-custom orders within 30 days of purchase. Any return gets credited to your Rustica account so you can easily order the right size for your project. 

DIY or Professional Installation?

You can always hire a professional contractor to assemble and install your barn door for an average cost range of $400-$600 dollars. However, our pre-assembled delivery option makes installation a breeze for the DIYer who loves the challenge of remodeling and renovating a space.

Although the barn door was originally used in a barn or stable, a rolling barn door is now a popular feature in all areas of a home. The most important step in purchasing and installing a sliding barn door is to choose the specific type of barn door slab that works best for your designated space. Rustica’s large supply of barn doors provides plenty of choices depending on your preferred barn door style. 

Rustica offers two available series—the Builder Series and the Designer Series—as well as a selection of mirrored barn doors. For those with a traditional design taste, you’ll find the perfect classic barn door under The Builder Series, like the Cottage Barn Door or the Z Barn Door. For a contemporary barn door, The Designer Series features doors that will make a statement in your home, such as the brightly colored Herringbone Barn Door or the sharply contrasted Grassland Barn Door. 

Do you want to install glass barn doors to brighten up a space? The Designer Series features doors crafted from varied materials, such as the Mountain French Full Barn Door. Standard Barn Door System: In this system, a hanger is placed on either side of a single door panel, allowing it to run along a singular track.

Bypass System: Double or triple sliding barn doors run along two or more tracks, passing in front of and behind each other. Each door requires its own rolling door hardware kit with two hangers on each end of each panel. You can also purchase a light-duty bypass for lighter door weight and a heavy-duty option for a larger weight capacity.

Shutter Door System: This system is used for smaller openings like cabinetry or windows. This category is available in a smaller selection of five different styles, ranging from rustic to contemporary: Full X, Z Barn, Steampunk, Rustica Reclaimed, and Plantation. The system can be engineered as standard, bi-parting, or bypassing.

2. Barn Door Tracks

After choosing your barn door, you’ll need to begin to piece together your barn door hardware kit. Kits are comprised of several different materials and depending on the number of panels and functionality of your barn door, you’ll find that you will need to purchase specific hardware. Although there are many options, it’s easy to begin the process. First, start by determining which barn door track system is best for your space. All of the tracks below are compatible with standard, bi-parting, and bypassing. 

Ceiling Mount Barn Door Hardware: Ceiling mount hardware is perfect for spaces that do not allow for a traditional track system or in a larger space where a room divider is desired. These track systems attach directly to the ceiling instead of a door frame. 

Cabinet Barn Door Hardware: This hardware is commonly used for cabinets or shutters but can also accompany full-sized doors with the use of additional hangers to manage weight capacity. This system is also good for a low ceiling clearance doorway that doesn’t allow for a traditional barn door track. 

J Track: This track features a traditional rolling design with contemporary and improved wheels that create a smooth and quiet slide. Perfect for spaces with limited header space, the track on this system sits closer to the top edge of the door while the hangers run smoothly without compromising stability.

Low Clearance Barn Door Hardware: If you have a low ceiling and limited header space, this is the track for you. This system features Rustica’s J-track design and only requires a minimum of 3” to function. A similar function is also available as the Top-Mount Low Clearance, which attaches to the top of the door instead of the face of the panel. 
 
Tube Track: A top-mounted tube runs across the door header while u-shape hangers rest above, running smoothly across. The final result is a sleek, contemporary design fortified with the stability of its unique hangers.

Flat Track: A simple system featuring smooth, flat bar and track with matching hangers. This system makes an understatement that won’t detract from the beauty of your door. Made of durable raw steel, this system can be finished in any of Rustica’s featured colors. 

Box Track: This system allows homeowners to display the face of their door slab without intruding hangers. The track attaches to the top of the door protecting the panel from drill holes.

I-Beam Trolley Barn Door Hardware: The I-Beam system is ideal for carriage doors and oversized doors. Rollers slide along a track like a trolley, safely accommodating larger weight capacity.

Most of the above barn door track systems are certified for both exterior and interior barn doors. Available finishes include 21 beautiful options, like satin nickel, copper, matte black, mountain gold, brushed stainless steel, bonded chrome, and raw steel. 

3. Barn Door Hangers 

Along with your track system, you need to choose your hanger style and finish. Most track systems can be finished to match a hanger, but you could always mix and match to find the perfect combination for your space. Contemporary statement options include the bright red Twig and the industrial Military hangers. A more elegant and delicate design can be found in the Rod Iron Scroll and the Royal. 4. Barn Door Latch

The next step of assembling your barn door hardware is to determine which type of barn door latch is best for your door. There are four different general categories of locks and latches. 

Rustica Door Latch + Lock: The Latch + Lock is a Rustica original featuring the unique design of the first-ever self-latching lock for a rolling door. This system can be locked and unlocked from either side of the door. Unlike other locks, no wall or jam drilling is required since the lock can attach directly into the door while the latch is part of the barn door track system. Be sure to check the compatibility requirements before purchasing. The Latch + Lock is compatible with most Rustica door styles up to 10 feet but is not compatible with doors over 2-inches thick.

Barn Door Teardrop Latch: This latch features a sleek design where a piece of flush hardware with a slot attaches to the wall or door jam and a second triangular piece is drilled into the door. When locked, this triangular piece will fall (like a teardrop) into the slot of the flush hardware.

Stainless Steel Cabin Hookand the Barn Door Hook: These are more traditional options made of quality materials. Using a hook and eye system, a single sliding door can be locked to the door jamb or to another sliding door.

5. Barn Door Pulls and Handles

Next, it’s time to choose the perfect barn door pulls or handles for your space. Next to the door slab design itself, this element of rolling barn door hardware can be the biggest way to make a statement. 

Barn Door Pull: In general, a pull includes a bar attached to a plate that drills into your door slab. This bar does not fall flush with the door, so it’s best used with a standard or bi-parting track system. A separate flush, back handle can be purchased so it allows for the back of the door to slide in front of a wall. This category provides the most diverse design options. If you’re looking for rustic barn hardware, consider purchasing the faux-rope Braided Barn Door Pull or the Santa Fe Barn Door Pull. How to Mount Barn Door Hardware

Installing barn door hardware is usually a relatively simple DIY project. Rustica's sliding barn door hardware kits come with detailed instructions to help you mount your door track to the wall. Still, it's a good idea to become familiar with the barn door installation process before you begin so you know what to expect.

To install barn door hardware and tracks:

1. Measure and mark your guides. With a buddy, use a measuring tape and pencil to measure and mark where your track will sit. This ensures that your track is centered and level above the door opening.
2. Attach the hangersand roller wheels using the included screws. Measure and pre-drill holes if they aren't already pre-drilled. Then, attach the barn door handle and lock system, if necessary.
3. Install a header board (if needed), also known as a mounting board. The header board is necessary for spaces where the holes for the hardware track don't line up with wall studs. 
4. Attach the floor guides. The installation process for these may differ slightly, depending on the type of floor guides you choose.
5. Mount the doors by hanging them with the hangers and sliding them through the floor guides.
6. Add the door stops based on where you need the doors to stop along the track.

Is Barn Door Hardware Adjustable?

Whether your barn door hardware is adjustable really comes down to the specific hardware you’re choosing. Some hardware kits may provide for adjustability; however, the hardware kits we design at Artisan Hardware are specifically engineered for the highest level of function. Our hardware kits are not adjustable, which makes it especially important to measure correctly before you install your hardware kit. If you’ve accurately measured your space, you should be able to work with one of our hardware kits to make sure the track fits comfortably within your space without providing too much or too little track length.

No matter the size of the door opening you’re working with, our team can partner with you to determine whether you need a standard or customized track length to best work within your space. How Much Weight Can Barn Door Hardware Hold?

You’ll find that barn door kits are designed to hold various weights; that’s why it’s so important to choose your barn door before you select its accompanying hardware. If you know the weight of the door slab you’d like to install, that decision informs your choice of hardware kit.

Most barn door hardware kits will accommodate at least 200 pounds when it comes to the door slab. That’s roughly the weight of the average interior slab door. Other options can hold up to 300 pounds, which gives you a little more flexibility when it comes to choosing the material of your door.

But if you’re interested in installing a solid wood door or a sliding barn door made of reclaimed wood, those door slabs are much heavier and you’ll need a different type of hardware kit. If you’re interested in installing a barn door that weighs 400 pounds or more, make sure to look for a sliding barn door hardware kit that’s touted as heavy duty. These kits are designed to hold up to 800 pounds and can generally accommodate just about any type of door slab you choose. Just make sure you know the weight of the door slab and that you carefully read the weight ranges your chosen hardware is designed to hold before making your purchase.

Can You Use Any Door with Barn Door Hardware?

For the most part, the answer is yes. While you’ll find many options on the market of doors specifically pre-designed to be used as sliding barn doors, in many cases you also can repurpose an existing hinged door as a sliding door. So, if you’ve found a dream vintage door or simply don’t want an existing wood or metal door to go to waste, there is the possibility that you can convert it to a sliding barn door. There are just a few items you’ll need to verify before knowing for sure.

First, does your existing door have enough width and length to fully cover your door frame? While a traditional swinging door fits within a door frame, a sliding barn door will need to be large enough to cover the frame from the outside. You’ll also need to make sure your existing door is a solid, rather than a hollow-core, version. Otherwise, you won’t be able to effectively install the sliding hardware. Most existing swinging doors also include openings for doorknobs—if this is the case, you’ll need to plan for filling the opening before being installing the hardware pull or handle. The same goes for any existing openings for the installation of hinges. If the door you’re working with meets these criteria, chances are good that you can repurpose it as a sliding barn door.
