Chop Bloc Care Instructions

Keep your Chop Bloc looking great and sanitized for safe food prep. Think of your Chop Bloc as a living thing. It will always be there for you as long as you provide a little love and attention in return.

Wood is timeless, full of character and durable, yet merciful to knives and day to day wear. It’s also versatile, workable and can be refinished as needed. Treat it well and it may turn into a cherished family heirloom.

Below, you’ll find the following tips and tricks to help keep your Chop Bloc clean, attractive and looking like new.

    All of our Chop Bloc products can be a useful addition to any kitchen, but as with any meaningful relationship, they demand care and respect.

    STEP ONE – PICK YOUR OIL

    Although there are many food grade options out there, we suggest using our trusted Tung Oil Finish. Comprised of pure Tung oil, a food grade orange oil solvent, and a whole lot of nature’s magic. This mixture comes standard when ordering your Chop Bloc oiled from our website.

    STEP TWO – APPLY OIL

    Never apply oil to bloc by pouring it on directly. Apply the oil to a soft, absorbent cloth in a generous amount first, then rub into the bloc in circular fashion (for end grain) or with the grain (for edge grain).

    STEP THREE – WIPE OFF EXCESS

    Once you’ve applied the oil with the cloth, wipe off excess with a dry, clean cloth. Let the oil sit in this state for roughly 15 min.

    STEP FOUR – REPEAT

    We suggest repeating steps 2 and 3 up to 3 times for the first conditioning of the bloc.

    UNFINISHED BLOCS (FOR NON FOOD SAFE PURPOSES)

    Our Chop Bloc countertops can add soul and beauty to your living space in a more decorative manor. If you choose to finish your bloc with a lacquer or varnish, you’ll still be able to enjoy the uniqueness and character of the wood.

    STEP ONE – PREP SURFACE

    As you prepare to seal your bloc with your choice of finish, ensure the surface is free of scratches, dust or blemishes.

    STEP TWO – APPLY SEALANT

    Apply desired sealant. For wood surfaces often exposed to water, we suggest lacquer. If possible, spray onto bloc in heavy amounts, waiting between coats. We suggest a rough buffing of the surface between each coat with a high grit sanding paper like 250 to 280.

    DAILY OR PER USE INSTRUCTIONS FOR FOOD PREP SURFACES SANITIZE

    It’s important to perform regular cleaning of your Chop Bloc promptly after each use. This may consist of household dish soap or any mild cleaning agent. If a more organic method is preferred, we recommend undiluted vinegar. Using harsh chemicals such as bleach can damage a wood surface more than a natural approach can.

    SCRAPE

    Using a fine edged scraper or spatula after washing will help to scrape off any stubborn debris or water. This also removes up to 75% more moisture than towel drying.

    DAILY OR PER USE INSTRUCTIONS FOR NON FOOD PREP SURFACES SANITIZE

    The same steps can be performed as with a food prep surface.

    DRY SURFACE

    It’s important to dry the surface promptly and adequately as it becomes wet. If improperly sealed and maintained, the moisture can do irreversible damage to the wood.

    STAIN REMOVAL

    Stains are unavoidable if using your Chop Bloc for food prep. These stains add to the character of your bloc. However, if you simply can’t handle the look or intensity of the stain, there is hope. Listed below are a few easy solutions, provided they’re applied promptly after the stain has formed. Keep in mind, you’ll want to re apply a layer or two of your desired food safe oil or conditioning after using each or any of these steps, as they can all dry out the bloc in some fashion.

  • LEMON SCRUB – Lemon juice and aggressive scrubbing coupled with time and repetitiveness can draw out the stain.
  • BAKING SODA – Baking soda, water and aggressive scrubbing coupled with time and repetitiveness can draw out the stain.
  • BLEACH (LAST RESORT) – An as needed amount of bleach can help remove the stains. Use sparingly and only as a last resort.
  • SCRAPING – As mentioned earlier, a good scraping with a fine edge has been known to help.
  • SANDING – When all else fails, reworking the Chop Bloc back down to it’s original state is always an option. Using sanding grits or 80 up to 120 will help with the bulk of the labor. Be cautious not to create a noticeable depression in one area, but rather try to take a fine layer from the entire Chop Bloc as to avoid giving the bloc an irregular cutting surface. You’ll need to re-apply your food safe oil after re exposing the wood.
  • MOUNTING OF COUNTER TOPS

    Due to the nature of wood, once you’ve applied your desired finish to your counter top, securely fasten your bloc to whatever frame or stand you’ve chosen to pair it with. This will ensure that your countertop does not shift or move throughout its lifespan.
