Sidelights & Transom Windows Buying Guide

A sidelight is a window beside a door; a transom is a window above it. These components extend the glazed area of an entrance, but their dimensions, framing and glass must be coordinated with the door assembly.

Identify the item type

Separate an individual window component from a complete entry listing.

Match the framing

Coordinate wood or metal with the door and wall depth.

Set glass and grid together

Choose the view, privacy and line alignment across the opening.

Start with the Scope of the Order

Decide whether you are buying a window component or replacing the whole entrance. An individual sidelight needs a coordinated connection to the door jamb and wall. A configured entry may include those relationships in one drawing, but its selected components still need to be confirmed.

For an exterior door and surround together, compare exterior entry assemblies. This collection is useful when the window design itself is the main decision.

Align Rails and Glass with the Door

Compare the sidelight’s divisions with the neighboring door rails. Repeating the alignment can unify the entry; a simpler window can keep attention on an ornate leaf. The width selected for the sidelight changes the proportions of each lite.

Choose the glass for its actual view path. A sidelight beside a solid door can still reveal the interior, so evaluate privacy from outside and inside under different lighting.

Measure the Full Framed Opening

Do not add glass dimensions to a door leaf size and assume the result is the rough opening. Frame members, joints and installation allowances occupy space. Have the installer use the approved assembly drawing.

For a room divider, review interior doors with sidelights and transoms to coordinate the glazing with an interior wall and swing.

Before You Order

  1. Define component or assembly

List exactly which door and window pieces the order must include.

  2. Choose the visual relationship

Set frame material, grid alignment and glass treatment.

  3. Approve the complete dimensions

Confirm wall depth, frame joints and installation opening.

Sidelights & Transom Windows: Common Questions

Is a sidelight the same as a transom?

No. A sidelight sits beside the door, while a transom is above it. An entry can use either or both.

Are these windows automatically operable?

Do not assume they open. Confirm fixed or operating construction for the selected item and configuration.
