Regular cleaning and maintenance is key to ensuring the longevity of your wood door. Especially exterior doors that come to feel all the repercussions of natural elements. So here are a few tips on how you can maintain and care for your door.

1. Dust - After installing your new wood door you should definitely consider adding it to your weekly dusting routine. You should dust your door at least once a week but especially before washing or restaining it. It’s important to get any cobwebs or dirt residue off your wood door to keep it looking spic and span.

2. Clean with a Mild Soap - You should clean your door at least once a month to get rid of contaminants before they become acidic and destroy the finish of the door. Create a soapy mixture with water and mild soap to wash your door. Use a non-abrasive brush to scrub the surface of the wood door and remember to rinse away all the soapy residue with hot water. This will keep your door looking fresh and new.

3. Polish- When your door starts looking dull, it’s time to polish. Polish your door periodically by taking a clean cloth and applying a light coat of furniture polish or wax to your solid wood door. Make sure the furniture polish or wax you decide to use is safe for natural wood surfaces.

4. Clean Glass- If your wood door features any glass make sure to wipe any fingerprints or residue off the glass with glass cleaner and a clean cloth. Clear and tinted glass requires a more frequent cleaning routine of once a week compared to textured glass styles that require cleaning every 2-3 weeks.

5. Restain- Every 3-5 years you should consider restaining your door depending on its current condition and how much weather it’s endured. Once you see any discoloration or decay in the finish, it’s time to restain.
