When shopping around for doors you are usually presented with two options, prehung or slab. Both options offer their own benefits, but what do those options mean and which one is the better choice for you?
What is a Slab Door
A slab door is solely a door. It does not come with a door frame, hinges or latch. Slab doors usually include a pre-cut hole for the doorknob. Slab doors are installed to an already existing door frame after their hinges have been prepped.
Slab doors can be challenging to install if you are inexperienced, but they still come with a few benefits that are worth mentioning. Think of a clean slate. A slab door is a lot more malleable than a prehung door. You will decide how to mount it and which hardware to use. Slab doors are also less expensive than prehung doors, which is always something to consider when making changes in your home. Another benefit is the flexibility of switching out slab doors. If you have multiple slabs, you can easily switch them out between the same frame.
What is a Prehung Door
Prehung doors are usually a little more expensive, but the hard part is done. A prehung door will already be mounted into the door frame, which means the hinges are prepped. Adding a prehung door can be fast and easy, but will require at least two people since prehung doors can be on the heavier side.
Consider the benefits of each option while trying to decide between prehung or slab doors. Depending on your skill level, you may want to ask a contractor which one would be the best option for your home before making any purchases.
